Relative Density

Stability Basics

Each object has a Mass (kg), when that object adds the force of gravity it gets a weight(newtons). When the object is put into water the force of buoyancy is removed from the force of gravity leaving the ratio of difference is known as relative density.

The Centre of Gravity (G)

Stability Basics

The Centre of Gravity of a vessel is where all the weight concentrates, as the vessel roles and the weights stay still the centre of gravity also remains in the same place

The GZ Curve (G)

Stability Basics

When the vessel rolls a righting lever is created which increases in size until it meets the top of the curve. It is at this point that the vessel has its greatest righting lever, after this point the lever gets smaller until the point of vanishing stability where the righting lever turns into a capsize lever.
